Content Grab Bag 6/8/18

It’s been quite some time since the last blog post. Here’s a rundown of everything I’ve released since the last one.

Scary Hour: A Super Mario Creepypasta Reading

CURSED

The tenth BADGRAPHIX Feature! This has been the flagship project of 2018 so far. In it, a mercenary misuses the power of a magic ring and releases an ancient curse onto his world.

Castle in the Sky Developer Commentary

I finally take a dive into the development of Castle in the Sky and document the decisions I made updating and maintaining it over the years.

The World Inside Your Pocket

This is a new Roblox project I’ve been working on for a while. It’s based off this colorization of the Kanto region I did all the way back in 2011.

It’s a colorization of the monochrome Kanto region seen in Pokémon Red & Blue, however this new 3D Roblox version also incorporates elements from Pokémon Yellow and the generation 2 games, Gold & Silver.

This project was an interesting exercise in programming, as the map rendered in full actually takes up too much memory to even render on my computer. To get around this limitation, the game is composed of placeholder blocks that are swapped out on the fly with their respective object, whether that be a tree, sign, door, etc.

The placeholder blocks are organized into 28 by 28-block chunks, and those chunks closest to the player are rendered to the player. When the player moves over to another chunk, the chunks the player moves away from revert to invisible placeholder blocks and the chunks the player moves closer towards transform into the more complex geometry the game actually looks like.

Due to the subject material, this project is vulnerable to copyright takedowns, so if it gets delisted at its current location, keep an eye out on this blog to find out where I relocate it.

Here are some screenshots taken during development.

That’s all for now!

10th Anniversary Content Grab Bag

Tomorrow marks 10 years since I first started producing content under the name BADGRAPHIX on my YouTube channel. A passion for video games made me decide on a name somewhat related to that, so I picked the username “badgrafix” as a bit of a riff on the Turbografx-16, but it was taken so I used “badgraphix” instead. I was only eleven years old when I chose the name, but I still like it and have consistently used it as a handle for my online presence since then.
There hasn’t been a content grab bag in a while due to my content releases slowing down, so I’ll be compiling them here followed by a little teaser for something coming tomorrow…

Project Creatures Gameplay Presentation

In this video, I present my progress developing my long-in-progress Roblox game Project Creatures. There have been some major changes since this was shown off, but the big idea remains the same. If I make further progress updates, you will find them first on my Roblox group BADGRAPHIX Creations.

Even More Project Creatures Footage

A Man & His Pillow

For a while, I was using “Eating A Nintendo Switch Cartridge” as the title for this video but decided on changing it to the true title shown at the end of the video. It is the eighth BADGRAPHIX Feature, the first in almost two years!

Roblox’s Tickets: A Postmortem

Earlier this year, I released a seven-part miniseries chronicling my experiences on Roblox. Those videos were fairly off the cuff in their presentation while the writing for this video was actually prepared beforehand, making it the first BADGRAPHIX video essay.

And The New Video Teaser…

The special will be available to watch at this link after it comes out.

Content Grab Bag 4/29/17

Hey all, it’s the end of the month so I figure it’s about time I do another grab bag.

Stories From Roblox: The Account Compromise

Episode 6 of Stories From Roblox focuses on events that unfolded in April 2016. My account was hacked during this period.

Stories From Roblox: Epilogue

Wrapping up the miniseries is this video, where I talk about the influence it had on my channel and drop some info on the John Doe rumors that Episode 1 was made in response to.

Content Grab Bag 3/31/17

It’s all YouTube stuff for the grab bag this time. I will be finishing up the Stories From Roblox miniseries in the near future, so only expect a few more episodes out of the pipeline. I may decide to continually add more in the future as more stories happen.

Stories From Roblox: Robloxian Scavenger Hunts

Also known by the title “Roblox: History Making Puzzle Games.” The audio quality on this one was bad–I’ll be sure to not record with my phone again.

In this video, I delve into the puzzle games I developed between 2009 and 2011.

Vlogging the Trip to PAX East 2017!

For the longest time, I’d share unedited vlog content on my secondary channel because I never thought it was entertaining enough to put on my primary channel, BADGRAPHIX.

This compilation turned out well enough where I thought it was worth posting, so here ya go.

Stories From Roblox: My Start

This episode ended up turning into a video on more than just my origins, so I gave it the YouTube title “Roblox: 10 Year Personal Retrospective.”

Content Grab Bag 3/14/17

Hey everybody, I think I’ll be using this “grab bag” format going forward to compile my releases together. Here’s what’s come out since the last blog post.

Stories From Roblox: The RHQ Forums

One of the most popular Roblox fan sites back in the day was Clockwork’s Roblox HQ. In the second installment of my “Stories From Roblox” miniseries, I recount its forum community and its eventual demise.

Stories From Roblox: The Greatest Foe

Learn about the old way enemies used to work for groups on Roblox in the third installment of the Stories From series, “The Greatest Foe Has Declared You An Enemy.”

Project Creatures Gameplay Footage

During the Project Creatures Blind Test, one piece of feedback I received was regarding the game’s camera. The user in question was hoping for something more 3D, akin to Paper Mario. In respond, I halted normal development to experiment with the game’s perspective. Here’s some footage I took while doing that. These are unlisted videos, some some of the footage is reused in Stories From Roblox 3.

Clothing Releases

Nothing new this time, but to commemorate Stories From Roblox 3 I have put The Greatest Foe T-Shirt back on sale! Like most of my clothing items, it is priced at 8 ROBUX.

The First Post on the Blog: Content Grab Bag

Hi everyone, welcome to the first post on the BADGRAPHIX Creations Blog! I’ve been wanting to establish a universal hub for all my work and this is the first step in doing that.

To kick things off, I’ll be going over the things I’ve released in the last few days. My creative output has been rich in this period so there’s a grab bag of stuff to go over.

Project Creatures Blind Test

First we’ve got the big release: a sneak peek at Project Creatures, the game I’ve been working on for the last year. This is a working title and the content is too. I’ve got a little bit of everything working so I wanted to throw it into the wild and see how people responded. Leave your feedback on the group wall after playing around in there and tell me what you thought–this is the stage where I make changes based on user feedback so I don’t throw out something completely unapproachable when it’s finished.

In Project Creatures, character movement is performed through a custom-scripted grid-based system. By no coincidence, this is the exact same system used in the early Pokemon games, so I released this.

Explore 1998’s Kanto in Full Color!

Many years ago, I brought the region of Red and Blue’s Kanto into full color using the palette of the GBA remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen. I also filled out the missing gaps, and today, I bring it into Roblox for you to explore around in. Not sure if I’ll go anywhere with this project, but I thought it’d be cool for people to explore the region without any boundaries. Haven’t you ever wanted to know what was in the grass east of Route 1?

Stories From Roblox: The Friend Request Exploit

A common question I get on Roblox is why the user John Doe is following me. With user ID number 2, John Doe is essentially the oldest unused account on the website. I set out to answer the question in this video.

“Stories From Roblox” is a series I’d like to continue. They’re easy to produce, and it’s exciting to tell experiences from the game I’ve had knocking around in my head for years.

Clothing Releases

To cap things off, check out these clothing releases. A new update is coming out that will remove the ability to make your limbs different colors. In response, I’ve released outfits that simulate this classic style so new players will still be able to do it.
